Sick Leave Bank
Overview
All employees working 30 hours or more per week are eligible to join the Sick Leave Bank (SLB). One local personal day is donated each year to join SLB. Enrollment is during Open Enrollment each school year or within 31 days of date of employment or eligibility for membership. An employee must be able to earn at least one local personal day from the beginning of employment to the end of that SLB year to be eligible for membership.
About Sick Leave Bank:
- July 1 is the first day of the SLB year
- Members may withdraw up to 25 fully paid sick leave bank days per year with a 100 day lifetime maximum
- Absence for personal illness/injury must be at least 10 consecutive work days (some exceptions exist)
- Bereavement and critical care leave for immediate family members with no minimum absence required
- Workers' Compensation absences are NOT covered (subject to all other rules)
- Must first use all accumulated leave except vacation
- Absences for elective procedures are not covered
Application Procedures
Personal Illness/Injury - You must be out for a minimum of ten (10) consecutive days to receive benefits. The maximum number of days that can be awarded is twenty-five (25). There are some exceptions – see Rules.
- Complete the Employee Information Section of the Employee’s Personal Illness or Injury SLB application.
- Have the physician complete the Physician Information Section.
- Return completed application to the Benefits Department.
Bereavement – Up to five days are available due to bereavement of a spouse, parent, child or sibling; up to three days are available for an employee's or spouse's grandparent, or the employee's grandchild, or father/mother-in-law. There is no ten day minimum absence requirement.
- Complete the Employee Information section of the Critical Care or Bereavement for Family Member SLB application.
- Return completed application to the Benefit Department along with proof of the death. Acceptable proof is a death certificate, a newspaper obituary or a funeral program.
Critical Care – Available for intensive or end of life care for a spouse, parent or child. The maximum number of days that can be awarded is twenty-five (25). There is no ten day minimum absence requirement.
- Complete the Employee Information section of the Critical Care or Bereavement for Family Member SLB application.
- Have the family member’s physician complete the Physician Information section.
- Return completed application to the Benefits Department.
General Info
The Sick Leave Bank Applications for either “Employee’s Personal Illness or Injury” or “Critical Care or Bereavement for Family Member” are available at the right.
In every circumstance, all accumulated state and local days must first be used to get benefits from the Bank. Sick Leave Bank pay is full pay.
The Sick Leave Bank Board meets the first Thursday of each month. Applications must be received in the Benefits Department by the Friday prior to the first Thursday of the month to be considered.
